ChatHealth

ChatHealth is an NHSdeveloped, clinically governed, secure messaging platform enabling safe, confidential twoway communication between service users and healthcare professionals. Developed and owned by Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust, ChatHealth has been adopted by 80+ NHS organisations across the UK across services including mental health, public health nursing, school nursing, crisis support, sexual health, and autismspecific pathways.

The platform allows service users to send a simple message to a dedicated, centrally managed inbox monitored by trained health professionals. For Adult ADHD services, ChatHealth provides a proactive “waiting well” offer, enabling teams to maintain supportive contact with individuals on long waiting lists. By offering timely advice, reassurance and signposting, ChatHealth strengthens engagement, reduces risk of escalation, and supports selfmanagement, all without increasing clinical burden.

Designed with safety, accessibility, and equity at its core, ChatHealth meets full NHS governance requirements and offers a communication channel that many neurodivergent individuals find more comfortable, predictable, and emotionally safe than phone or facetoface contact.

Core Functions

Secure TwoWay Messaging

Service users message a dedicated number; staff log into a secure, centrally managed dashboard to respond. No apps, logins or downloads required.

Proactive Waiting-List Support

ADHD teams can maintain contact with individuals during long waits, providing reassurance, guidance, riskmitigation advice and signposting.

SelfManagement Support

Practitioners can deliver short, focused conversations via messaging to help users navigate ADHD challenges and offer local or national resources.

Flexible Service Model

ChatHealth is operated locally. Teams determine staffing, hours, service scope, and response times, enabling high adaptability to capacity and local priorities.

Data Capture & Reporting

Services can capture performance against KPIs, identify demand patterns, and export transcripts to EPRs as structured records or PDFs.

Regulatory Compliance

As an NHSowned and run digital platform, ChatHealth meets extensive information governance and clinical safety requirements:

  • Developed and operated within Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust’s governance environment.

  • Trust meets NHS England’s DSPT standards.

  • Full DPIA, clinical riskmanagement and safety protocols.

  • Designed to meet DTAC requirements with comprehensive evidence available.

  • Safe transcript transfer into local EPRs, meeting DHSC Records Management Code of Practice.

Price Model and Cost

Costs for new NHS adopters would typically relate to service configuration, onboarding and licence/support arrangements.

Clinical Validation and Evidence

ChatHealth is widely deployed across 80+ NHS organisations, demonstrating strong realworld effectiveness:

  • Proven safe and secure method for confidential support across mental health, public health and community services.

  • Case studies demonstrate significant positive experience among neurodivergent users who prefer text messaging for emotional safety, cognitive comfort, and communication control.

  • The platform is used in Leicestershire’s neurodiversity services, offering tailored advice and support from a specialist multidisciplinary team. Feedback indicates improved engagement, reduced anxiety and better access to personalised guidance.

Integration and Compatibility

ChatHealth is designed for simplicity and low operational burden:

  • Works alongside existing EPR systems; staff can:

  • copy/paste conversation content into EPRs

  • upload full PDF transcripts

  • store anonymised PDFs when identity is unknown

  • No technical integration required for operation

  • Meets all NHS governance, data storage, security and audit requirements

  • Supported by NHS IT professionals with national deployment experience

Service User Design / Involvement

ChatHealth’s design is evidenceinformed and continually shaped through codesign and serviceuser feedback:

  • Neurodiversity-friendly communication: many ADHD/autistic users prefer messaging over phone calls due to sensory, social, or emotional safety factors.

  • ChatHealth enables clinicians with specialist expertise, some with lived experience to reach out to service users. This shapes tone, interaction style, expectations, clarity and accessibility.

  • Users report feeling heard, validated, and able to express themselves in ways they cannot through other communication routes.

  • Staff can request feedback at the end of conversations to constantly improve service design.

The platform’s simplicity (utilising SMS and when available RCS messaging, no apps) directly mitigates task initiation challenges, sensory overload, and digital exclusion risks.
